Origin Russian

Originally the French spelling of На́дя, an informal Russian pet form of the virtue name Наде́жда (“Nadezhda, Nadyezhda”), from наде́жда (“hope”), entered as a translation of the Ancient Greek word from ἐλπίς (“hope”) with the same meaning. See also Ἐλπίς (“Elpis”).
